I am often asked what foods I suggest that are supportive to brain health and function. Below you will find my favorites. Enjoy! (What is good for the brain is good for the whole body.)

1.      Avocados - contain Lutein, a carotenoid which has shown to be supportive to our vision.  Plus half an avocado contains about 20% of the daily suggested amount of Vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids that the brain seems to love.

2.      Arugula, Spinach, other leafy greens – contain several health supportive nutrients and provide fiber to assist the body in waste elimination which is key to a healthy body and mind. Leafy green research

3.      100% Grass-fed beef and wild caught salmon– help maintain a balance of fatty acids to promote healthy brain cellular membranes, healthy brain tissue, and myelination which is important for information to travel throughout the brain.

4.      Cruciferous Veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage - contain choline, a nutrient that is very supportive to the brain’s production of key neurotransmitters like acetylcholine, the nervous system, and the digestive system. Plus these veggies are a great source of fiber.

5.      Blueberries – are great antioxidants that support the brain.

6.      Celery – contains luteolin. It helps remove free radicals, is anti-inflammatory, and is neuroprotective.

7.      Nuts like Walnuts – provide omega 3 fatty acids that nourish the brain and protect against oxidative damage; and sunflower seeds which are high in Vitamin E which has been shown to be neuroprotective and a powerful antioxidant.

8.      Extra virgin olive (organic, cold pressed, and in dark glass bottle) Many olive oils on the store shelve are rancid, and do not support brain function.  My favorite brand is Oleavia.  It is produced in a way that preserves the many natural nutrients in olive oil.  It has the highest content of phytonutrients I have found.  Tastes great too! This is one of the few foods I stock at the office. Request your bottle today.

I try to buy organic whenever possible. It may not be perfectly “clean,” but I believe it is the best option next to growing your own.
