Contrary to common belief, human brain function does not naturally decline with age. Instead, the brain is capable of regenerating and repairing brain cells. We just need to understand how to support our brain with this process.
Research suggests that the brain creates new cells or neurons throughout our lifespans. The hippocampus is said to create about 700 new neurons per day. This is fantastic news! But, what you do matters! You can support this awesome process, or you may be unknowingly disrupting it.
What is eaten can either promote wellness or as Ann Wigmore puts it, be “the slowest form of poison.” Eating foods like clean fruits and vegetables, rich in nutrients as close to the way they come in nature is typically best. Fats that contain a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have been shown to be vital to a healthy brain (and heart). Two of my favorite foods containing healthy fatty acids are wild caught salmon and 100% grass-fed beef. Good fats and a healthy functioning liver to break down fats are vital to optimal brain function.
What we drink matters too! Many have gotten on board with the flavored beverage craze. Ever read the label? Beware of all the chemicals. Most beverages are loaded with them. Instead, I opt for reverse osmosis or distilled water. (UPDATE: I have changed to using distilled instead. Here’s why.) Then I add trusted minerals to my water. Connect with me to learn what minerals I prefer.
The air we breathe affects our brain as well. I avoid burning candles or using air fresheners with artificial fragrances. Why? What we breathe in goes right to our brain to the olfactory bulb. There are many chemicals released in the air with candles and air fresheners that are toxic to the brain. Instead, I diffuse 100% therapeutic grade essential oils. For a lift I like peppermint oil. During allergy season, I use a mix of peppermint, lavender, and lemon oils. There are so many wonderful natural smells to enjoy - without the toxic chemicals that negatively affect brain function.
Movement or exercise is also a key component to a healthy body and brain. We all know this, but often don’t prioritize it. Maybe we need a little motivation. Did you know that exercise actually has been shown to promote the production of BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor)? This is a fancy way of saying that exercise promotes the health and growth of new brain cells! Healthy sun exposure also promotes BDNF. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why exercise outside feels so refreshing, mentally and physically. Exercise also promotes the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. We all need to get a move on it!
Lastly, to support brain function we must revisit the importance of restorative sleep. While we are sleeping, the brain’s lymphatic system helps remove toxins and repairs damaged cells. (Your brain is very busy while you sleep!) Sleep is super important for brain health and cellular detox. For years, I struggled with sleep issues. I was always tired all the time. I just didn’t have enough physical or mental energy to have a high functioning brain. Fast-forward to now. I discovered the underlying reasons why I wasn’t sleeping or feeling well. I addressed them with natural solutions that supported cellular detoxing and my ability to produce energy so could get my health back on track. What a difference getting good quality sleep makes. In summary, avoiding or minimizing toxic chemicals in our food and water are as important as eating foods and drinking clean water to support our body’s innate ability to heal and regenerate. Sleep is a critical time in which our brain detoxes and regenerates. We need to take getting enough restorative sleep seriously. We learned how exercise helps us produce BDNF, so we want to make movement a regular part of our life. (Always seek professional medical advice prior to starting any new program or exercise.)
