Acetaminophen. Autism. Is There a Connection?

 

When doing a Google or AI search, you will likely find that there is no evidence to link acetaminophen with autism. Your doctor will likely tell you the same thing. But let’s do a little investigating, and then you can draw your own conclusion.

 

Recently, the exploration of what could be contributing to the huge increase in the number of children dealing with symptoms of autism has gained momentum. This is largely due to our Secretary of Health and Human Services bringing to light the epidemic numbers of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Thankfully, he has supported a deep dive into all possible causes of the extraordinary increase in cases of children who struggle physically and cognitively to enjoy life and interact with those around them readily.

 

Depending on the source, the rates of autism are now about 1 in 31 children. In boys, the rates are approximately 1 in 23; in girls, the rates are approximately 1 in 100. Far more boys are diagnosed with autism than are girls.

 

One of the hot topics in the news now is acetaminophen and its possible connection to an increase in autism. Let’s take a quick minute to see what is known about acetaminophen.

 

Acetaminophen has been widely used since the late 1980s. It largely replaced aspirin. The most common brand name in the United States for acetaminophen is Tylenol. (But there are other brands, like Equate and Up&Up.)

 

Acetaminophen is often used to help manage pain or as a preventative pain medication/drug. It is commonly used with adults and children, even with infants.

 

What individuals are more susceptible to ill health effects of acetaminophen?

 

Individuals with decreased liver function or ability to process the toxic metabolites from drugs like acetaminophen are at greater risk for detrimental impact to their health. The following individuals meet this description:

 

1. Elderly folks generally have a decreased liver capacity to process toxic metabolites.

2. Infants do not have a fully developed detoxification system yet. (Supporting this statement is the fact that as many as 60% of infants have jaudice, an indicator that their liver is not yet functioning optimally. Among premature infants, around 80% of them are jaundiced during the first weeks of life.) Source.

3. Individuals who are malnourished have an impaired detoxification ability.

4. Those who consume a lot of alcohol have impaired liver function and ability to detoxify.

 

What are the ill effects of acetaminophen, which include signs of liver problems? (According to drugs.com, individuals experiencing any of these symptoms should “stop taking acetaminophen and call your doctor at once.”)

1. Stomach pain (upper right side)

2. Loss of appetite

3. Tiredness

4. Itching

5. Dark urine, clay-colored stools

6. Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

7. Skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling (learn about other more serious skin issues associated with acetaminophen here)

 

When is acetaminophen generally used in hospital or clinical settings?

1. For mild pain, acetaminophen is often given through an IV as a core component for post-surgical recovery.

2. It is often combined with various opioids for pain management in a variety of situations.

3. It’s the first line of defense in cases of fever or pain in pregnant women, infants, and children.

4. Acetaminophen is typically given to newborn boys post-circumcision every 4 to 6 hours for 1 to 3 days following the procedure.
